Information Literacy Competency
This site is dedicated to a three year longitudinal project to enhance undergraduate nursing student information literacy competency at the California State University Los Angeles School of Nursing.
Project Summary
- "The overall aim of this proposal was to support a longitudinal study of the effectiveness of curriculum-based information literacy instruction in the baccalaureate degree nursing program..."
Desired Outcomes:
- To develop a best-practice model for integration of information competency (IC) within the discipline of nursing education for a diverse student nurse population
- To produce information literate students who can contribute clinically and professionally to the field
Project Objective:
- To "graduate baccalaureate nurses with demonstrated information competency as evidenced by the Expected Information Literacy Competencies (EILP) for the Undergraduate Student before Completion of the Baccalaureate Nursing Program at CSULA."
Longterm Objective:
- To "extend the initiative to include all of the other undergraduate nursing options i.e. the Associate Degree Nurse to baccalaureate degree and the entry-level master’s nurse program.”
Project methods:
This project was completed with interdepartmental collaboration between the California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and the CSULA School of Nursing (SON) Faculty. Desired Information Literacy (ILC) outcomes were established and embedded throughout the eleven quarter undergraduate nursing curriculum. Intervention and control groups of students were identified. Both groups received pre and post tests of ILC skills administered through WebCt. The control group received the existing library database training utilized in the SON and the intervention group received a series of Library mediated trainings in desired skills and knowledge imbedded at what were determined to be key points throughout the curriculum.
