Welcome

I want to welcome new and continuing students to Fall Quarter 2011.  The budget crisis continues to influence the number of course offerings available.  We recognize that the advisement is an important element in your academic success.  We encourage you to meet with an advisor, to select your academic program, and to develop an academic plan that organizes your course schedule for the coming year.  Please remember to bring “unofficial transcripts” to your advisement meetings.

We are updating the bulletin boards in the Department and are posting a Departmental “Tip of the Week”.  These tips and the new bulletin boards will have useful information for you as well as reminders of University policies and deadlines.  Please make sure to read the bulletin board when you visit the department offices.

We have developed a number of workshops/programs that will be offered in Fall Quarter.  I hope that you will make plans to attend these events.  A calendar is posted on the Department website.  The Department will host a Welcome/Orientation meeting for all students on Monday, October 3 from 3:15 – 415pm in the Applied Gerontology Institute.  We will serve light refreshments.    Please make time to visit with your fellow students and your faculty. Please call the Department at 323 343-4590 to confirm your participation.  We plan to offer workshops for CFS students throughout the academic year, so please let me know if you have ideas for workshops in Winter and Spring Quarters.

It seems as if the challenges in public higher education remain constant as we begin a new year.  I will rely on your support, your ideas and your energy to help us strengthen our CFS community.  I plan to host a Child and Family Studies Townhall meeting mid-quarter to learn more about your ideas..
I look forward to seeing you in Fall Quarter.

Sincerely,

Rita Ledesma, PhD, LCSW
Chair, Department of Child and Family Studies
Professor, School of Social Work

Program Impaction (effective Fall 2011)

Program impaction means that the number of applications from fully eligible students to a designated major far exceeds the number of spaces available in that major. However, students can still be admitted to the major if they meet the supplementary admission criteria.

The following are impacted undergraduate programs/majors at Cal State L.A.:

For specific information regarding the supplemental admissions criteria for each major, please visitwww.calstatela.edu/univ/admiss/impaction/program_impaction_0910.pdf.
