As a unit of the Division of Academic Affairs, The Office of Graduate Studies and Research provides leadership and service to promote graduate studies and to help faculty and others obtain off-campus funds for projects that support student and faculty research, scholarship and learning and that contribute generally to strengthening the institution. Special attention is given to interdisciplinary efforts that can contribute to leadership in a changing world.

Graduate Studies
Master's degrees have become the entry level for many professions and Cal State L.A. offers more than fifty Master's degrees in a large range of academic disciplines, as well as a joint doctorate degree in Special Education and over fifty graduate certificate and credential programs. Programs are housed in departments located in the university's six Schools: Arts and Letters; Business and Economics; Engineering and Technology; Health and Human Services; Natural and Social Sciences; and the Charter School of Education, which also offers a full range of degree and credential programs approved by the State of California. Each school has a school graduate dean to help assure that many decisions concerning individual students can be made quickly.

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research administers the following programs for CSLA graduate students: Graduate Equity Fellowship Program; International Graduate Student Tuition Waiver Program; and the California Pre-Doctoral Program. The Office also administers the CSU Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program whose goal is to increase the diversity of persons qualified to compete for instructional faculty positions on CSU campuses by providing support during pursuit of their doctoral degree.

Research and Sponsored Programs
The campus receives over $15 million per year in individual and institutional contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements from federal, state, local and private organizations. As part of Graduate Studies and Research, The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) assists faculty and staff in applying for extramural funding primarily from federal agencies, private foundations and other sources. The office provides services at all stages of the proposal submission and pre-award process, including budget preparation; project conceptualization and development; assistance with writing, research, and editing; connections with other academic institutions, government and community agencies, and businesses and industry; and proposal technical preparation and submission.

The Office for the Advancement of Science, Engineering and Mathematics-Education (SEM-Ed) provides coordinating leadership and assistance to the many campus programs in these disciplines, especially those that involve students directly.

Presidentially Chartered Centers,
Institutes and Bureaus

The Office also oversees the more than 35 presidentially chartered campus centers, institutes and bureaus which help achieve the mission and goals of the university on campus and beyond. They often serve as catalysts for interdisciplinary projects and the exploration of new academic frontiers.
