Geosciences and Environment

Welcome to the new Department of Geosciences and Environment

The Department offers rigorous academic and much needed technical training in urban and environmental issues. Our students will have both the technical and planning know-how to tackle a number of sustainability issues in Los Angeles and beyond.

Bachelor of Arts in Geography
Whether studying human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives toward understanding the complex spatial relationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments.

Bachelor of Science in Geology
Geology is for individuals interested in environmental sciences, mineral and rock resources, natural hazards, water resources or simply learning about how the earth works and the role that we play in shaping our environment.

Master of Science in Geology (Environmental Hydrogeology)
The MS in Geology is focused on hydrogeology and environmental science. Students receive both the theoretical and applied aspects of hydrogeology during their education. Alumni are employed with many consulting and government agencies in southern California and throughout the nation. Graduates have also chosen to earn Ph.D.'s at leading universities.

Master of Arts in Geography
The MA in Geography provides an opportunity for students to advance their research skills. It is designed to prepare students for teaching at the community college level, for employment in government and private industry, and for further graduate study in geography.

Careers

Students graduating with a BS in Geology or Environmental Geoscience are prepared for professional careers in fields such as engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and petroleum geology. Entities that hire geologists and environmental geoscientists include environmental and engineering consulting firms, local/state/federal government geological agencies, water-related agencies (e.g. regional water quality boards), geotechnical firms, and utility companies

Students graduating with a degree in Geography have opportunities in a variety of professions. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in cultural and physical environment and who enjoys field work, archival research, and travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban and environmental dynamics to using computers and satellite imagery to analyze environmental and social phenomenon that are of relevance to the society
