A Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Web site for Cal State L.A.'s College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology!

As we approach the turn of the century, it is clear that this is truly the most exciting moment in our history. I can think of no better educational choice for you to make than to prepare for a challenging and rewarding career in engineering or technology. Your academic success can open doors to exciting careers and new opportunities in this high-tech world we live in.

Many key factors have fallen into place in our recent past, and their union has created the kind of exciting academic environment that used to befall only the largest, oldest, and wealthiest institutions in the nation. It's true...the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology has always been one of the largest and most active colleges on campus, but there has never been a better time to seriously consider the opportunities it affords. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Phase I of the $31 million renovation of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology building has been completed, and Phase II is well underway.  Students are already using state-of-the-art computer and laboratory facilities in the new wing.  Once the project is finished, in spring of 2000, we will have the most technologically-advanced and student centered engineering and technology facilities in the nation!
  • Our 1999 Mini Baja Team placed first overall for the third time in the past four years at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Mini Baja West competition in April.  The team's off-road vehicle also won first place awards for endurance and acceleration, as well as second place for maneuverability.  The winning team of 14 students and two advisors outperformed 60 other colleges and universities during the three-day event hosted by Kansas State University.
  • The engineering and technology industries have bounced back and firms are hiring graduates at a record pace. In fact, more and more companies are turning to Cal State L.A. at the end of every academic quarter in search of soon-to-be-graduates to hire.
  • Cal State L.A.'s third solar-powered electric vehicle, Solar Eagle III, won first place among 36 entries in last June's "Sunrayce 97," a 1,300-mile, ten-day cross country race from Indianapolis Motor Speedway to Colorado Springs, Colorado. We defeated teams from many of the most prestigious universities in the nation, including MIT, Stanford/Berkeley and Texas A&M.

The Mini Baja and Solar Eagle projects are just two examples of the success a team of engineering and technology students can achieve when supported and encouraged by an army of faculty, administrators, and staff members who believe in them. Several student competitions and organizations described in this Web site mirror this tradition of excellence.

Make no mistake about it...Cal State L.A.'s College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology has reinvented itself in the face of rising new technologies and students' increasing need to receive an education for the future. A preeminent university in one of the nation's largest urban centers, Cal State L.A. is constantly honored for the unparalleled education it continues to offer dedicated students.

Don't just take my word for it!  Take a look around our Web site and see for yourself.

Now is the time...this is the place!

See you in the classroom!
