Department Scholarship Applications Due April 15
Below
are listed (1) the names of various departmental scholarships for
undergraduate and/or graduate students from which awards may be
made each year; (2) the criteria for eligibility for each; (3) and
the methods for applying. If qualified, a student may apply for
more than one scholarship using the attached application form
along with the accompanying materials stipulated for each.
Students
do not need to be full-time in order to apply for scholarships,
but they must be full-time during the quarter they receive the
award.
Deadline
for applying is Friday, April 15, 2005.

THE CLAYTON AND PATRICIA MATTHEWS SCHOLARSHIP
for undergraduate
students in the English B.A. program.
Criteria for Eligibility
- Be a declared English major with an interest in
writing
- Have a 3.0 overall GPA
- Have junior or senior status
- Be in continuing student status
Accompanying Material
- The completed application form
- A sample of representative work, either creative writing
or a scholarly paper
- Three letters of recommendation from English professors at
CSULA
THE WILLIAM LEARY IRWIN SWERDLOW SCHOLARSHIP
for undergraduate
students in the English B.A. degree program or graduate students
in the English M.A. degree program.
Criteria for Eligibility
- Be a
declared English major or have classified graduate standing
- Have a
3.0 GPA in major
- Be in continuing student status

THE POTTER-RASKIN FELLOWSHIP
for undergraduate students in the
English B.A degree program or graduate students in the English

- Show financial need

THE DOROTHY MCKENZIE SCHOLARSHIP
for graduate students in
the English M.A. degree program.
Criteria for Eligibility

a 3.5 GPA in coursework in the M.A. degree program
- Be planning to
work in the field of children’s literature
- Have completed both
English 430 and 432 (or an equivalent at another university) with
at least one “A” and one “B” grade
- Be in continuing
student status

THE JOHN A. PALMER GRADUATE HONORS SCHOLARSHIP
for graduate
students in the English M.A. degree program.

- Have a 3.5 GPA in course work in the M.A. degree
program in English
- Be advanced to candidacy
- Be in continuing
student status

THE FEDERICK SHROYER MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP
for graduate
students in the English M.A. degree program.
Criteria for
Eligibility
- Have a 3.0 GPA in coursework in the M.A. degree
program in English
- Have classified graduate standing
- Be in
continuing student status

THE HAKE SCHOLARSHIP IN LINGUISTICS
for students enrolled in
the Minor in Comparative Linguistics or the Major in English.
Criteria for Eligibility
- Must be enrolled in the Minor in
Comparative Linguistics and have completed 4 courses in
linguistics or be enrolled in the Major in English and have
completed 4 courses in linguistics.
- Be in continuing student
status.
