Christine Maksimowicz has won the 2005
David L. Kubal Memorial Essay Prize. She is a graduate student and
a Teaching Assistant in the CSULA English Department. Her
essay-"Subversive Incarnation: The Apocryphal Acts of Offred"-on
Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's
Tale considers how in the character
of Offred "Textuality and sexuality merge in a self-authored
subjectivity that finally experiences itself in an authentic
relationship between word and flesh."
As an essay
prizewinner, her name will be inscribed on the perpetual plaque
honoring all Kubal Memorial Essay Prize winners.
