The David L. Kubal Memorial Essay Prize

Essay Submission Deadline:

January 7, 2008 by 6pm in the
Advisement Office.

The David L. Kubal Memorial Essay Prize is presented annually. Every year CSULA students are invited to submit essays on a literary or cultural topic. For further information, please see the requirements and guidelines listed below:

  • The author must be an English Major or minor currently registered at Cal State L.A.

  • Previous Kubal Essay winners are not eligible

  • The essay must be on a literary subject

  • The essay submission may be a revision of an essay written for a Cal State L.A. course, or it may be based on M.A. thesis work currently in progress. In the latter case, the submission must be revised to stand on its own as a critical essay.

  • The essay must be formatted using standard 12-point type, double spaced, with one-inch margins all around. Offset quotations only may be either 12-point or 10-point type and may be either double spaced or single-spaced. Except for the title page, in the upper right corner of each page indicate the title and page number (but not the author’s name).

  • The essay should conform to either MLA or the Chicago Style.

  • The essay (including endnotes and works cited) shall be no more than 35 pages.

Submit two copies of the essay either stapled or paper-clipped, with the title of the essay formatted as described above. The author's name or other identifying information should not be included on either copy of the essay. The author’s name, college identification number, mailing address, telephone number and/or email address, and the title of paper must be submitted on a separate sheet. Submissions will not be returned.

Submissions are made to the English Department, Advisement Office (E&T A638) during the Fall Quarter.

The essay prize winner will be announced at the David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture (held usually in January or February of the Winter Quarter). The prize is $100.00, and the student’s name will be engraved on the English Department’s perpetual plaque of previous annual winners.
