The British Council's UK Writer-in-Residence Program was established at Cal State L.A. in 2005. Through this program US campuses become the home base for some of the brightest emerging writers in Britain today. Authors in the program spend a month in the United States with American students, teaching and contributing to campus and academic life as well as to the cultural life of their host city.

Cal State L.A. is one of two American universities chosen to host the Writer-in-Residence program, the other being Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
