
Communication is concerned with the study of human symbolic interaction. Some of the specific areas of study are communication in one-to-one situations and small groups, organizational communication, public speaking and persuasion, social-political movements, and the aesthetic bases of human communication.
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication provides sound training for those who want to develop perceptiveness and skill in the various aspects of communication among people. The program is structured to provide a foundation for careers in business, law, government Single service, helath, theology, teaching, public relations, media communication, and other professions in which an understanding and utilization of the process of compre-communication is essential.
Designed to meet the needs of both career-oriented students and those planning to pursue graduate education, the undergraduate major offers courses in theories of communication; dimensions of public discourse; interpersonal, small group, and intercultural communication; organizational communication and interviewing; persuasion and social influence; language, symbolic processes, and aesthetic dimensions of speech; instructional development; and forensics, debate, and reader's theatre.
Students in the program have the opportunity to participate in nationally recognized debate, individual events, and readers' theatre activities.
The Master of Arts degree in Communication emphasizes the study of human discourse, employing empirical and critical methods. Using both rhetorical and communication theory traditions, the program utilizes comprehensive study in its generalist approach to speech communication. The graduate program is a sound liberal arts program which provides experience in such skills as problem solving and research techniques that can be used in a number of contexts and career fields.
Communication majors may join the campus chapters of Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi national honor societies which are open to qualified students in all academic disciplines. Numerous scholarships are avaialble to students in all disciplines who meet established criteria.
