California State University, Los Angeles offers an Educational
Specialist Credential in Visual Impairment and a MA degree in Special
Education with an emphasis in Visual Impairment. The purpose of this
program is to prepare teachers to work with infants, toddlers,
children, and youth who are blind and visually impaired, including
those with multiple disabilities. Students in the programs in visual
impairment at CSULA are prepared to teach in diverse urban society, and
take courses that promote educational equity, collaboration, reflective
practice, while maintaining mastery of the body of knowledge for the
specific discipline of interest.
As graduates of Masters in MA degree in Special Education with an
emphasis in Visual Impairment, one may find work as itinerant teachers,
resource room teacher, designated support providers, and special
classroom teachers, or as teachers at specialized schools for visually
impaired children and youth. They may also serve as consultants and
support professionals such as public school teachers in elementary,
middle, or high schools.
Program Outcomes
Credential candidates learn to teach academic and functional skills,
including reading and writing braille. Students learn instructional
strategies and methods for adapting materials for learners who are
visually impaired. They also develop skills to assess functional vision
and determine learning media. Emphasis placed on preparing candidates
to provided instruction in independent living skills, low vision
efficiency, use of assistive technology, leisure/recreation skills,
vocation/transition and social skills.

As a part of the Option in Visual Impairment, students receive
individual advisement and instruction from expert faculty members who
combine extensive classroom-teaching experience, research, and
pre-service and in-service teacher development in the area of Visual
