Education Specialist
Credential: Intern Option
Division
of Special Education and Counseling
CSULA,
Charter College of Education
Program
Website: www.calstatela.edu/centers/spedintern
The Education
Specialist Intern Program was established to provide candidates with
adequate support for their teaching while they complete the credential
requirements for the preliminary credential in one of five credential
areas: mild/moderate disabilities, moderate/severe disabilities, visual
impairments, physical and health impairments, and early childhood
special education. The University collaborates with the employing
school district, county office of education, charter or nonpublic
school to provide guidance, support, and supervision while the intern
completes a two-year program of coursework and fieldwork in an area of
specialization.
The Education
Specialist credential program prepares special education teachers to
work in urban schools with students from culturally and linguistically
diverse backgrounds. The credential program stresses excellence in
teaching as well as collaboration, inclusion, and differentiated
instruction. The university and employing school district or school
each provide extended guidance and supervision while the interns
complete all coursework and fieldwork requirements for the
credential. Faculty maximize university-based instruction through
seminars and coursework, by modeling state-of-the-art teaching, and
providing opportunities for the intern to discuss real-world teaching
problems and concerns within the context of theory and practice. The
employing district or school provides the intern with a full time
teaching assignment and district support (i.e., staff development,
resources and materials). The university provides the intern with two
support systems: 1) direct support for their teaching through the
coaching and collaboration of an on-site support provider and
university supervisor; and 2) indirect support through university
coursework that supports specialized instruction and assessment skill
development as well as provides opportunities for discussion of their
teaching challenges within the context of theory and practice.
*The Education
Specialist Credential in Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe
disabilities authorizes teaching school-aged children and youth
with IEPs aged 5-22 years; the credentials in Visual Impairments and
Physical and Health Impairments authorize teaching children and youth
birth to 22 years; the Early Childhood Special Education Credential is
required to teach children birth to 5 years.
