Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, PreK-12 Specialization
California State University, Los Angeles launched its new Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree program in Educational Leadership, in fall 2009 with approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University System. COHORT 1: All successfully advanced to candidacy as of October 2011.

The CSULA Doctorate in Educational Leadership is a college-wide degree program that draws on faculty expertise across the college and the CSULA campus. The doctoral program is designed for those who seek leadership roles in educational organizations and are committed to addressing the challenges of urban education through relevant and meaningful scholarship and practitioner-based inquiry.
The Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at CSULA is built around four program goals:
- Educational Leadership in the Service of Justice, Access, and Social Change,
- Leadership Grounded in Knowledge and Expertise in Teaching, Learning and Organizational Change,
- Critical Reflection Embedded in Leadership Practice, and
- Leadership that Engages with the Broader Community
The program goals are woven through the three emphases offered in the CSULA program:
- Educational Leadership for System and School Redesign
- Educational Leadership for Urban Teaching and Learning
- Educational Leadership for Students' Special Needs and Supports
- Organizational Theory and Leadership for Change
- Understanding and Using Research to Answer Questions about Diverse Urban Schools
- Race, Language, Gender, and Disability: Educational Equity, School Policy, and the Law
- Using Quantitative Methods to Analyze Inequitable Schooling Outcomes and to Target Improvement
- Equity, Access, and Achievement in Urban Public Schools: The Impact of Curriculum on Teaching and Learning
- Exploring Teaching, Learning and Leadership for Urban Education Using Qualitative Research
- Advocacy, Community Engagement and Governance: The Social and Political Contexts of Education
- Practitioner Research Embedded in School Communities

Important update – The GRE exam has been revised with a new format, questions and scoring. Be sure to check the ETS website for preparation and study materials that match the new exam. Avoid using old study guides. Scores from the last five years will still be honored for admission purposes. Contact the GRE at www.ets.org. CSULA APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FALL 2012 IS MAY 15TH.
REVIEW OF COMPLETE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BY JANUARY 30, 2012 WILL BEGIN IN FEBRUARY FOR NOTIFICATION BY APRIL 2, 2012. APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER JANUARY 30, 2010 WILL STILL BE CONSIDERED UNTIL THE FALL 2012 COHORT IS DETERMINED. COMPLETE APPLICATIONS INCLUDE ALL MATERIALS THAT ARE PART OF THE SUPPLEMENTAL ED.D. PROGRAM APPLICATION AND THE CSU MENTOR APPLICATION.
SO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IF YOU WISH YOUR APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED YOU MUST COMPLETE THE CSU MENTOR ONLINE APPLICATION CONCURRENTLY WITH THE PROGRAM APPLICATION.
| To apply to the Doctoral Program at Cal State L.A., you will need to: |
- Go to CSUMentor.edu and complete the CSU Graduate/Post-baccalaureate Application for Admission found at http://www.csumentor.edu/planning/graduate/educational_leadership.asp
- Apply and submit application materials to the doctoral program. Complete the CSULA Supplemental Application Form in the Application Packet available for download on this webpage accompanied by:
2 sets of official transcripts for each college or university attended
3 letters of recommendation, including the recommendation forms that are in the application packet.

Letters of recommendation should speak to the leadership and scholarship potential of the applicant. One letter must be from a university faculty member who is familiar with the applicant’s work. One letter must be from a person who has supervised the applicant in an employment setting and the final letter must address the applicant’s fit for the EdD program.
- A professional statement with responses to A, B, and C as described in Part III on page 2 of the application;
- A professional resume; and
- A writing sample authored solely by you as described in Part IV on page 2 in the application.
Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores no more than five years old(Note: scores from all three sections of the GRE General Test are required)
