Fieldwork in Rehabilitation Counseling
Students in the rehabilitation counseling program complete a 100-hour practicum experience and a 600-hour internship experience.
Practicum is completed in one semester, and internship can be two semesters or more.
The practicum and internship courses are a time for counseling students to gain experience with what a practicing rehabilitation counselor does in the field. While being closely supervised by an on-site supervisor and a faculty supervisor, students perform activities routinely performed by practicing rehabilitation counselors.
Internship experiences should mirror as closely as possible the work that rehabilitation counselors do in the field. Internship students should gain experience working one-on-one with clients, using the counseling skills they have acquired and practiced during their rehabilitation counseling courses.
