The Division of Special Education and Counseling at California State University, Los Angeles
offers graduate programs of study leading to a variety of undergraduate/graduate degrees, credentials and certificates.
Preparation is offered for teachers, counselors, school psychologists and specialists in special
education, counseling, rehabilitation, and related services. A doctoral program
in Special Education is offered jointly with UCLA for those seeking preparation
to teach at the university level and to serve in other leadership roles. In addition to on-campus preparation programs, a number of special education, school counseling and school psychology internship programs are available through cooperative programs jointly
implemented by many school districts and the division.
Graduate Programs
The graduate programs in Special Education provides both a Master of Arts degree with 11 options
and a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The graduate program in Counseling provides a Master of Science degree with seven different options. Documents for NASP re-accreditation are currently under review.
Undergraduate Programs
The program offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Services. This program trains students for employment in a variety of rehabilitation-oriented settings, and also prepares students to pursue graduate work in a variety of counseling specialties.
CSULA also offers an undergraduate blended major option in Urban Learning that provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree along with requirements for the Education Specialist (Special Education) internship teaching credential. The Urban Learning major is supported by a depth area in social sciences that focuses on diversity and a choice of either an education minor to prepare students to teach in elementary schools or an education specialist minor for teachers working as interns in special education settings
Federally funded traineeships are available in some areas of study.
In addition, many scholarships are provided through the Division of Special
Education and Counseling and the Charter College of Education.
