Biology graduate student Zahra Atefi and undergraduate Biology
major Phany Phaphon were honored as recipients of the Golden
Eagle Awards of Excellence at ceremonies held April 1, 2008.
Congratulations!
Danny Huang, a Biology major, and Zahra Atefi, Biology
graduate student, were among the recipients this year of Cal State LA
Alumni Scholarships. Congratulations!
Dr. Nancy
McQueen is the recipient of the 2008 California State University
Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB)
Biotechnology Faculty Research Award. This award honors CSU faculty for
outstanding research achievement in the area of molecular biology and
biotechnology. The award was presented at the Annual CSUPERB
Symposium in Oakland, CA. Dr. McQueen is the second consecutive Cal
State LA Faculty member to receive this award, and the third since the
award was instituted in 1991. Read more about the award and Dr.

Biology student Becky Chan has been selected as a recipient of a
2008 Howell – CSUPERB Research Scholar Award. CSUPERB and the Howell
Foundation co-sponsor these competitive Research Fellows Awards for CSU
undergraduate research students. The Doris A. Howell Foundation fosters
the development of young investigators, particularly those who plan to
pursue careers in the field of women's health care research. Becky is the
third Cal State LA student to win a Howell – CSUPERB Research Scholar
Award since its inception in 2001.
Dr. Patrick Krug and
Biology graduate student Ryan Ellingson
report the discovery of a new species of sea slug, Alderia willowi,
using a combination of molecular and morphological markers.

Timothy Ng, Biology Major, on being named as one of 60 national
Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship Award Winners!
Congratulations to
Maritza Hernandez, Biology major and Heriberto (Eddie) Lima,
Biology graduate student for winning first place in the Biological Science
and Agricultural undergraduate and graduate categories of the 2007 Cal
State LA Student Symposium on Research, Scholarship, and Creative
Activity. Maritza and Eddie will be two of the students representing
Cal State LA at the
21st Annual CSU Student Research Competition at CSU Dominguez Hills on
May 4-5, 2007.

Demian Willette, a
graduate student in the
laboratory of Dr. Patrick Krug
from the Department of Biological
Sciences, won first place in the
Biological Sciences division of the CSU statewide Student Research
Symposium at Channel Islands. The
title of Demian's talk was A DNA
-based Method for Identifying and
Quantifying Larvae of
Taxonomically Diverse Invertebrates.
This is the third year in a row
that a student from the Biological Sciences
Department at CSULA has
won first place in the competition.

Amelia Russo-Neustadt, MD, PhD (Department of
Biological
Sciences, College of Natural and Social Sciences) has recently been
elected as
an Associate Member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology
for "outstanding research, innovation and productivity" in the fields of
basic
neuroscience and mental health pharmacology. Only a few new members are
elected each year out of a large pool of nominees across the nation;
therefore
this membership represents an honor for Dr. Russo-Neustadt and the
