Prof. Oring joined the faculty at CSULA in 1971. He has published
extensively on the subjects of folklore, humor, and symbolism. He
has served as editor of Western Folklore, and is currently
on the editorial boards of Journal of Folklore Research and
Humor: International Journal of Humor Research. He was a
member of the Executive Boards of the International Society for
Humor Studies (2000-2001) and the American
Folklore Society (2000-2003). He was elected a Member of the
Society of Fellows of the American Folklore Society and a Folklore
Fellow in the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.
Prof. Oring is member of the American
Anthropological Association, American
Folklore Society, Society
for Psychological Anthropology, California
Folklore Society, and International
Society for Humor Studies.

Professor Oring has taught a variety of courses in the department
of anthropology, but specializes in those that address expressive
culture -- courses in folklore (ANTH 437), folk literature (ANTH
245), and religion (ANTH 437). He is also interested in anthropological
theory and regularly teaches the graduate seminars in theory (ANTH
510AB). His experience as a writer and journal editor have led him
to develop a course in academic writing and publication (ANTH 481)
for advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Interests |
| Prof. Oring has published articles in a wide array of
folklore, humor, anthropology, and Jewish Studies journals. He has
contributed to museum catalogues and has written book chapters and
encyclopedia articles. His books include: Israeli Humor (1981);
The Jokes of Sigmund Freud (1984); Humor and the Individual
(1984); Folk Groups and Folklore Genres: An Introduction
(1986); Folk Groups and Folklore Genres: A Reader (1989); Jokes
and Their Relations (1992). His book Engaging Humor is
currently in press. |
