Why Cal State L.A.?

Can you think of a good reason for attending Cal State L.A.? We can think of a few...

A Campus for the real L.A.

With a breathtaking hilltop view of the San Gabriel Valley and serene atmosphere, you wouldn't expect that CSULA is located near the heart of one of the nation's top cities. We are very close to downtown Los Angeles, Alhambra, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Monterey Park. Whether you like calm and quiet or prefer to be at the center of things, you are never too far.

We are very convenient. Our campus Transit Center has both a train and bus station, so it's easy to get here. And considering the cost of gas, a campus with so many options is a big plus. About 1000 students also live in on-campus apartment-style dorms.

How much?

Maybe you thought you couldn't afford a top-notch college education? Cal State L.A. costs about $15,000 a year. That includes fees for fall, winter, and spring quarters and the cost of books, transportation, and more. Most students at CSULA get an average of more than $7,245 in financial aid. And, of course, there’s no better investment than in your own education.

Programs

Not sure what to major in? Don't worry. With 75 majors and a plethora of specialization options, you'll soon discover something you like. Already know what you want? Well, we probably have that, too.

Our majors speak for themselves. U.S. News & World Report has ranked our undergraduate Business and Engineering, along with graduate Nursing programs, as among the nation's best. The University is #11 in Hispanic Outlook's top 100 and #29 in the rankings by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. You probably didn't know that Cal State L.A. had the first Chicano Studies department in the nation.

Do you worry that a degree will take too long? We offer a flexible schedule, which allows students to take morning, afternoon, and evening courses. Modern student computer labs and a library with more than a million books will also help you make progress toward that degree!

Interested in studying in another state? You can do that with our National Student Exchange Program. Have worldly ambitions? Our Study Abroad Program gives you global learning experiences. Explore the country that offers your degree program and find what the world can offer you.

Your classmates

There are about 20,000 students at CSULA. There are more than 130 student clubs and organizations. We are especially proud of our wonderful campus diversity. You can “travel the globe” without leaving the campus! Plus, our students leave this University with a special strength in working closely with people from all backgrounds. That’s why the most progressive employers of today really value and actively recruit CSULA graduates.

Your professors

Cal State L.A. attracts the best of the best when it comes to its professors. In the last 60 years, more than 150 of our professors have received major honors for excellence, with 12 honored as statewide CSU Outstanding Professors. Programs receiving an amazing number of awards include education, english, chemistry, history, art, biology, mathematics, electrical engineering, modern languages, sociology, speech communications, biochemistry, political science, psychology, and more. In 2006, a chemistry professor here was one of only four in the country named by the Carnegie Foundation as a U.S. Professor of the Year. Here, you’ll find that real professors like this do the teaching rather than T.A.s!

Why are our professors so great? Well, first of all, they are knowledgeable in their fields. Many publish studies and work on research, frequently partnering with student scholars. Here, professors are supportive, accessible, friendly and genuinely concerned with seeing that their students succeed.

Your campus

This is a campus on the move. Recent campus additions include an integrated sciences complex, engineering building remodel, a new Student Union with a fitness center, theatre, and meeting rooms, and a state-of-the-art Crime Lab.

On campus, you'll also find…
