VIP Parent Workshops

How can parents help their children succeed in college?
(Presented by Steven Jones, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies)

Learn about the academic life your students are beginning. Emphasis will be on the transitions and adjustments new college students and their parents typically experience. Information provided will help you move through this transition with as much knowledge and support as possible. There will be an opportunity to have any questions or concerns addressed by a University administrator.


What do parents need to know about financial aid?
(Presented by Jason Lam, Cal State L.A. Financial Aid Adviser)

Learn how to pay for your child’s college education with grants, scholarships, and loans from federal, state, local and private sources. The workshop will provide assistance and helpful hints for completing the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid advisers will provide information about the many scholarships available to students, and they will be on hand to help you learn about other available resources as well as to answer questions.


What can your children begin doing now to prepare to enter graduate or professional school?
(Presented by Philip LaPolt, Acting Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research)

It is often said that the master’s degree is the new bachelor’s. This workshop describes the types of experiences that will make a difference when your child decides to apply to graduate or professional school. Emphasis will be on indentifying ways to encourage the behaviors that will improve your child’s chances of getting admitted. This includes, building solid relationships with faculty mentors, getting involved in research experiences as an undergraduate, and other tried-and-true strategies. Experienced graduate advisers will be on hand to answer questions.
