Panetta Institute Congressional
Internship
The annual Congressional Internship Program is designed to
encourage and develop future leaders of this nation. This
internship program differs from other programs in that it
provides students with an intensive two-week orientation at the

of California’s congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. for
approximately two and one-half months. Due to the efforts of the
Panetta Institute and its patrons, including the CSU Chancellor,
a full scholarship covering all costs is awarded to the
students. Students selected to participate in this prestigious
program are appointed by the university presidents from the
twenty-three campus California State University system, Santa
Clara University and Dominican University of California.
Selection is based on exemplary scholastic record, interest in
politics and potential for a public service career.
First-priority application window: December 15, 2010 – February
28, 2011.

Hope College Research Experiences for Undergraduate (Biology, Environment)
The Hope College Biology Department (Holland, Michigan) seeks
students to participate in a 10-week summer research experience
funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experience
for Undergraduates program. Students will conduct an
independent, but supervised, basic science research project with
a Hope College Biology faculty member. The theme of our program
is “Environmental Impacts on Biological Systems: from Molecules
to Ecosystems” and allows students to pursue research in many
different areas of biology, as well as interdisciplinary fields.
The objectives of the program are to: 1) allow students to
establish a foundation for teaching biology by mastering a
greater body of knowledge; 2) illustrate the connection between
research and teaching; and 3) broaden the student's
understanding of science through participation in original
research. Selected students will be supported by a stipend of
$4,300 for the 10 week period, and provided with on-campus
housing at half cost. In addition, up to $500 in total travel
costs will be provided for a round trip to Hope College from the
student's home.

Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Internships
SCEC offers two internship programs for college students from freshman to master's level. SCEC/SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) interns are primarily juniors or seniors, and most projects are best suited for students majoring in earth science or a related field. SURE interns are paired one-on-one with a SCEC scientist at that researcher's institution or field site, to work within that scientist's field of specialty. SCEC/USEIT (Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology) interns must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in Fall 2011. USEIT interns work on collaborative teams at SCEC headquarters at the University of Southern California and conduct computer science research to benefit earthquake science.
