The Jazz
Studies and Commercial Music programs are
designed to prepare students to perform Among the many successful graduates of the program at Cal State L.A. are James Newton, Luis Bonilla, Lennie Niehaus and Gordon Brisker. The Cal State L.A. Jazz Ensembles have performed at many prestigious events including, in recent years, the International Association of Jazz Educators National Convention, the Pacific Coast Jazz Collegiate Jazz Festival and the University of Oregon Jazz Festival. Since 1984, the Jazz Ensembles at Cal State L.A. have produced five record albums and three compact discs. The annual Cal State L.A. Jazz Festival features local high school and community college bands and professional guest artists. Recent guests have included Peter Erskine, Poncho Sanchez, Red Holloway, Bobby Shew, Gary Foster, Nick Brignola, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, and the B# Quartet. The Computer Music Studio at Cal State L.A. offers beginning to advanced courses in music synthesis and offers students the opportunity to create and perform original works both in the studio and in a concert setting. The studio consists of state of the art MIDI work stations with Macintosh computers and multitrack recording capability. Opportunities exist for students to work with the jazz ensembles as well as to collaborate with students in such diverse fields as dance, theatre, video and digital graphics. The Music Department has extensive facilities including, rehearsal studios, three computer music laboratories, electronically equipped classrooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal halls, individual practice rooms, use of the new Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex and a music listening room with a library of more than 11,000 recordings and scores. The University Library houses another large collection of music books and scores. Musical instruments are available for loan to students enrolled in music programs. Scholarships are available including the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton scholarships. The campus is located on a 175-acre hilltop at the interchange of the San Bernardino and Long Beach freeways at the western end of the San Gabriel Valley, about five miles east of the Los Angeles Civic Center.
