institutions at a host campus in the region. The students
explore graduate opportunities and resources by participating in
numerous workshops conducted throughout the day. Note that this
event is for all disciplines except medicine, dentistry,

Graduate and Professional Schools
Information Day
The goal of this event is
to acquaint students with opportunities and requirements for
graduate education on a variety of campuses. Many of our
students continue academic work after receiving their
baccalaureate degrees and, consequently, they seek information
about masters, doctoral and other professional degrees.
Recruiters from public and private institutions are invited to
attend and provide information relating to their respective
universities and professional schools to all interested
students.
Additional activities
include a workshop on the application process and related
information pertaining to successful admission to
postbaccalaureate studies and a panel of graduate students who
offer their experiences and are available for questions to
interested students.

WAGS/UMI
Distinguished Master's Thesis Competition
The Office of Graduate
Studies and Research coordinates the selection of a campus entry
each year in the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS)
and University Microfilms International (UMI) distinguished
Master's Thesis Award competition. Each member institution is
asked to submit one nomination for the award.
Cal State L.A. has had two
winners in recent years, from History and Civil Engineering.
A notice announcing the
competition and describing the selection process is sent out to
the college associate deans each Spring quarter. Nominees must
have earned the master’s degree within the previous four
quarters. For example, in the 2002 competition, eligible
students were those who graduated during Summer ’01, Fall ’01,
Winter ’02, and Spring ’02.
Each college is asked to
nominate one thesis. A selection committee convened by the
Office of Graduate Studies and Research determines the campus
nominee.
For more information,
contact your college associate dean or the Office of Graduate
Studies and Research at (323) 343-3820.

MA/MS in
Interdisciplinary Studies
The Interdisciplinary
Studies major at Cal State L.A. is a highly restricted program
designed for students whose professional/academic objectives are
unique and cannot be met by existing master’s degree offerings.
Each student admitted to the Interdisciplinary Studies major
creates a unique program that comprises course offerings from at
least two departments/divisions in related disciplines. Some
recent examples of Interdisciplinary Studies programs include
American Cultural Studies (Departments of Communication
Studies, History, and Anthropology), Scenography
(Departments of Theatre Arts and Technology), Biomathematics
(Departments of Biology & Microbiology and Mathematics), and
Environmental Science (Departments of Geology, Geography,
and Chemistry). In each case, the Interdisciplinary Studies
program is prepared with the assistance and approval of faculty
and administrative advisers who evaluate the student’s proposal
and academic qualifications.
To qualify, a student must
have earned a baccalaureate degree in an area cognate to the
areas of the proposed Interdisciplinary Studies major and show
evidence of having met all course prerequisites of the colleges
and departments/divisions in which course work for the
Interdisciplinary Studies major is proposed; must have a minimum
2.75 grade point average
(A = 4.0) in the last 90 quarter units attempted, and must meet
all college requirements, test scores, and grade point average
for the master’s degrees of the colleges and
departments/divisions in which course work for the
Interdisciplinary Studies master’s is proposed. Approval for an
Interdisciplinary Studies major is based upon individual
justification by way of a formal written application.
Applications are submitted to the Dean of Graduate Studies and
Research if course work is to be taken in departments/divisions
in more than one college, or to the appropriate college graduate
dean if the majority of the course work is in
departments/divisions within one college.

Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program
Seed Grants Research
Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity
Program
Seed
Grants Research
Established in 1993 with
funds from University Auxiliary Services (UAS), the Grant Seed
Money Fund seeks to increase the number and amount of external
grant and contract awards through direct support of a Principal
Investigator or potential PI. Funding will be provided only to
support activities directly related to preparation of a major,
competitive proposal, to an external agency. Examples: faculty
release time to prepare the proposal, research assistant time;
purchase of grant-related software or hardware, focused travel
to granting agencies and bidders’ conferences, and grant-related
workshops. Monies may not be used for institutional cost
sharing. Support is for competitive grants only, i.e. not for
annual renewals of the same award. Within one year of the award
letter date, successful applicants for funding must provide a
“final report” in the form of a high-quality grant proposal to a
major agency submitted through normal University/UAS channels.
The amount of seed grant funding typically will be limited to
$5,000, and faculty will be given priority. There is no
application deadline. Funding is on-going, so long as funds are
available. To apply, simply complete the form below and return
it to the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research or the Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs.
