The California
Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the pool of potential
faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of California State
University students who have experienced economic and educational.

number of CSU students who enter graduate programs at one of the
University of California institutions.
Each of the applicants
selected will be designated a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar
and will work closely. with a California State University
faculty sponsor to develop an overall plan which leads ultimately
to enrollment in a doctoral program. The plan is to be tailored to
the specific goals and career objectives of the student.
In addition the program
provides:

Travel Funds
for the student and faculty sponsor to visit U.S. Ph.D.-granting
institutions and also for them to attend a professional meeting
appropriate to the student's development.
Summer
Internship Opportunity to apply for a fully funded
Summer internship for the student to participate in
doctoral-level research.
Funds for
other related activities, such as student membership in
professional organizations and subscriptions to journals,
graduate school application and test fees, and minor research
materials costs.
General Eligibility and
Selection Criteria
The students selected
as Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars must be .upper division or
master’s degree students who are enrolled at a CSU institution as
of Spring 2003 and who will be enrolled at a CSU campus for at
least one term of the academic year 2003-2004.
Applicants will be
selected on the basis of three major criteria: potential for
success in completing a doctoral program, probable effectiveness
of the student/faculty plan, and level of economic and educational
disadvantage.
All applicants must be
either U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of
application. Current or previous California Pre-Doctoral Scholars
are not eligible to apply. Each applicant must have a faculty
sponsor who- will be available for the duration of the plan
specified in the application. The program is designed for students
interested in obtaining doctoral degrees. Students interested in
entering professional schools to obtain professional degrees in
law, medicine, dentistry or related fields are not eligible.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW
TO DOWNLOAD THE PRE-DOCTORAL APPLICATION FORM OVER THE INTERNET
This procedure will
allow you to download a blank application and save it on your
computer. Notice that yon-can save a blank form, but you
CANNOT save the form after you have completed
it,
you can only PRINT it (please read the last paragraph on this
page).
In order to download
the application over the internet, please visit the following web

There are three links:
(1) Student Application Form;.(2) Faculty Sponsor Form; (3) Adobe
Acrobat Reader 4.0+

When you click on
the student Application Form link, you will download the first
part of this application package (pages 1-3). Depending
on your system and your web browser, clicking on this link will
do either one of the following two things:
-
It will save
the Student Application Form on your system. You can choose
to save it on your hard drive or on a floppy disk, and
open it later. When you open it later you will need a password
and the Adobe Acrobat Reader software, version 4.0 or later.
For Adobe Acrobat Reader see instruction 3, below.

OR it will
try to open the application form on your screen, within your
internet browser. In order to open it on your screen, you will
need to enter a password. Once it is open, then you can use
your browser’s menu to save it on your hard disk or on a
floppy disk, and open it later. To save it use the menu item
File/Save As from your browser. You will need the password and
the Adobe Acrobat Reader software, version 4.0 or later.

When you click on
the Faculty Sponsor Form link, you will download the second part
of this application package (pages 4-7). Depending on your
system and your web browser, clicking on this link will do
either one of the following two things:

It will save
the Faculty Sponsor Form on your system. You can choose to
save it on your hard drive or on a floppy disk, and open it
later. When you open it later you will need the Adobe
Acrobat Reader software, version 4.0 or later (see
instruction 3, below).

OR it will
try to open the application form on your screen, within your
internet browser. Once it is open, then you can use your
browser's menu to save it on your hard disk or on a floppy
disk, and open it later. To save it use the File/Save As menu
of your browser. When you open it later you will need the
Adobe Acrobat Reader software, version 4.0 or later (see
instruction 3, below).
The Faculty Sponsor
Form should be given to your Faculty Sponsor.

If vour system
does not have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, then click
on the Adobe Acrobat Reader link. This will take you
to Adobe's Website, from which you will be able to download and
install Acrobat Reader on your machine. The instructions are
self-explanatory.
After downloading is
finished, the forms are saved under the following filenames:
You can open the form
(if you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 4.0 or later) and you
can complete it on your computer. Make sure you complete all the
required information. When typing information into the provided
text boxes, make sure that you DO NOT exceed the textbox space. If
you do exceed it, then any additional information will be lost.
After you have
completed the form, please go over it very carefully, make sure
there is no information missing and print it, using the File/Print
menu of Acrobat Reader. Although you can save the blank form,
you CANNOT save the completed form. You can make
corrections on the form as long as the file is still open. If you
have to make any changes after closing the file, then you have to
open it again and type in all the information from the beginning.
The process of downloading, saving and completing the form on your
computer is quite transparent and user-friendly.
If for some
reason you have difficulties in getting it to work, you can always
use the hard copy given to you by your campus Pre-Doctoral
Advisor. After completing the information on the form, please sign
and return to the campus Pre-Doctoral Advisor.
