 Criteria for Membership

Membership in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only.  Students cannot
apply to join the organization.  Each year, the local chapter screens juniors, seniors, and graduate students in all departments of the University and selects the students who will be invited to join.  This selection is based on Grade Point Averages and good character.  Criteria for membership include the following:

1.  Juniors and seniors must have completed at least 36 units of courses at Cal State L.A., and
  • if in their junior year, they must rank scholastically in the upper 7.5% of their class, by college, or
  • if in their senior year, they must rank scholastically in the upper 10% of their class, by college.

2.  Graduate students must have been advanced to candidacy in their degree program, and
  • they must have completed at least one academic year in residence at Cal State L.A., and
  • they must rank scholastically in the upper 10% of all graduate students in their college.

Selection of new members is done each year during the Winter Quarter.  Our initiation ceremony is an annual event that happens every April, before Honors Convocation.
