Introduction

Jose L. Galvan is a Professor of Education in the area of Applied Linguistics and currently serves as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at California State University, Los Angeles.

His responsibilities include oversight of the university’s graduate programs, the research and sponsored programs office, campus clinics, and the presidentially-chartered centers, institutes, and bureaus, and in addition, he coordinates the development of the University’s international academic programs. 

Dean Galvan joined the faculty of Cal State L.A. in 1990 and served as coordinator of the TESOL M.A. Program for six years before becoming Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, a position he held from 1998 until his appointment as dean in 2005.
 An active principal investigator with more than $6 million in grants and contracts, he has been active in the proposal review process at the local, regional, and national levels. 

He has extensive overseas experience, most recently as director of a 3-year USAID-funded project to train science and mathematics teachers in Egypt.  His current research interests are in sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and cross-cultural studies, and he is the author of a widely-used textbook on writing literature reviews for students of the social and behavioral sciences.  

In addition to his work at Cal State L.A., Galvan has also taught at UCLA and at Teachers College, Columbia University.
