Block A Basic Subjects
Basic subjects include: communication in the English language (both oral and written communication); critical thinking, to include consideration of common fallacies in reasoning and; inquiry into mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning and their applications.
This block must be completed within the first 45 units counted toward the baccalaureate degree. Transfer students who have not completed this requirement must take at least one of these courses each quarter until the requirement is met.

Understanding the political institutions in America is one of the statutory requirements for the CSU system campuses. These are included among the total units of the General Education program at Cal State LA in block A.
