The 2009-2010 academic year promises to be a challenging time for the California State University (CSU) system. The state of California is facing an unprecedented fiscal crisis that has resulted in a $26.3 billion deficit. The impact of this on the California State University system includes a reduction of approximately $564 million in the system’s base budget. As one strategy among others, the CSU has implemented furloughs of most of its employees this coming academic year, including faculty, staff, and management employees. A furlough consists of a temporary reduction in days worked and associated pay, where the reduction does not permanently impact one’s base pay.
The impact of furlough days on the campus community will include the following:
· On six days in the academic year, the campus will observe State Budget Closure Days (on these days, all administrative offices will be closed and all classes previously scheduled on these days will be cancelled).
· On approximately two days/month throughout the year, the campus will observe Administrative Closure Days. On Administrative Closure Days, most administrative offices will be closed, and services greatly reduced in all areas. However, classes scheduled to meet on these days will be held (unless you are otherwise notified by the course instructor).
please see the state budget closure and administrative closure calendar for these dates.
· Most faculty, staff, and administrators will be observing approximately two (2) furlough days/month. Many of the staff and administrators will observe furlough days on the Administrative Closure Days, but some staff and administrators and most faculty will be observing furlough days on other days (chosen at their discretion). The impact of these furlough days on instruction will vary with individual faculty members; generally, furlough days will be announced in a course syllabus, but it is in your interest as a student to keep in contact with your instructor about this.
