Faculty

With the exception of the state budget closure days (6 during the 2009-2010 academic year), faculty members will designate their furlough days, subject to approval of the appropriate administrator (typically, a College Dean).

If you are an Academic Year (AY) faculty employee (i.e., you work on a quarterly basis or you teach three quarters/year during the year), you must take 18 furlough days during the academic year (beginning Fall quarter, and before June 30, 2010).  If you are a Calendar Year faculty employee (i.e., you work 12 months in an appointment such as a department chair position or a Director position), you must take 24 furlough days between August 2009 and June 30, 2010.  If you are a 10-month faculty employee (e.g., a 10-month librarian), you must observe 2 furlough days per month, during each month in which you are on duty (from August 2009 until June 30, 2010).

A furlough day may be observed on any academic work day (for AY faculty), and not solely on instructional days.  Please note that every day, Monday through Friday, from Fall Faculty Day until grades are due (including the Saturday of exam week) is an academic work day.  You should choose furlough days so as to minimize the impact on any given course/student group.  Every day on which campus is open is a work day for CY faculty; any such day may be observed as a furlough day for individual CY faculty.  Faculty in CY appointments may choose to —but are not required to—follow the staff/management furlough calendar.  The Payroll calendar indicates academic work days (in lavender) for AY faculty.  You may also wish to see which pay checks cover which pay periods, by consulting the Pay Warrant Table.

To designate the days on which you will observe furloughs, please complete the Certification Form and submit to your department/division/school chair. The Chair will forward the form to the College Dean’s office for approval. You will be notified by the Dean’s office when the furlough days are approved. If they are not approved (because compelling operational needs require you to choose other days on which to observe the furlough), the Dean will designate alternative days.

For more information, you may want to review the CSU/CFA Agreement or the Power Point presentation (Faust) to the Academic Senate (August 18, 2009)If, after reviewing the documents linked to this page, you have further questions, please direct them to your College Dean or to the Acting Director of Faculty Affairs.
