Introduction

What is Turnitin.com?

Turnitin.com is the world's leading online plagiarism prevention resource for educators and students concerned with developing quality writing and research skills.

When did Turnitin.com start?

Turnitin.com got its start in 1997 as the "paper submission portal" for Plagiarism.org.

What's new at Turnitin.com?

  • Turnitin partners with WebCT.

  • Turnitin releases a login and registration API.

  • Turnitin launches a new website and 3 new products.

  • Turnitin founder appears on 60 Minutes with Morley Safer.

How does Turnitin.com work?

“Plagiarism prevention” system on the Turnitin.com  prevents and detects plagiarism by comparing submitted papers to the entire Internet as well as to an exclusive database of previously submitted papers to the site. The results of their comparisons are compiled, one for each paper submitted, in custom "Originality Reports."

All work submitted to Turnitin is checked against three databases of content:

  •  A copy of the publicly accessible Internet (more than 2 billion pages updated at a rate of 30-40 million pages per day);

  • Millions of published works (including ABI/Inform, Periodical Abstracts, Business Dateline, and tens of thousands of electronic books);

  • Every student paper ever submitted to Turnitin.com.
