Title: Lab Consultant
Lab Consultant will work
in the Open Access Labs. The main responsibility of a Lab
Consultant is to support the users (students, faculty, and
staff) of the Open Access Lab. Support includes (not
limited to) assist users with basic software problems on various
computer platforms (SUN, PC compatibles, Macintosh), assist
users having hardware or network problems, and maintaining
a neat and orderly lab. Consultants must be prompt,
courteous to lab users and must be able to clearly communicate
solutions or directions to users who have varying degrees
of computer knowledge.
Lab Consultants
at this level work independently without direct supervision
of the Lab Supervisor and are mentors to Intern Lab Consultants.
Lab Consultants must know the operating procedures of the
labs, proper code of conduct, and University and Open Access
Labs Policies as they relate to lab use, lab users, network
accounts, and computer use.
Supervised
and supported by the ESS Lab Supervisor, the Lab Consultant
shall:

Diagnose
simple software, hardware and network problems.

Report
software, hardware and network problems as applicable.

Report
user problems and initiate emergency procedures if applicable.

Diagnose
user account problems and know where to direct students.

Assist
users with basic software problems on various platform.

Assist
users with the e-mail system and internet access.

Orient
students to the various services and resources available
in the labs.

Diagnose
and resolve printing problems.

Maintain
lab print job menu.

Cross-train
the Intern Lab Consultants.

Keep
updated on CBT and WebCT material.
-
Actively
participate in open WebCT forum(s).

Maintain
lab security for software, hardware, passwords, alarm
codes, and special lab areas.

Perform
other duties as assigned.
Candidates for Lab Consultant must have some computing experience,
good communication skills, good people skills, and a strong
desire to learn. Experience with various applications such
as Office Suite, Web Browsers, and e-mail is desirable.
