CSULA Chess Tournament
Inspired by this year's One Campus, One Book selection The Tattooed Soldier, this chess tournament is open to Cal State LA students, staff, and faculty.
The tournament was organized to showcase the University Library's Munitz's Chess Collection, a gift of many fine chess sets and over 350 volumes of chess literature donated to the University by former CSU Chancellor Dr. Barry Munitz. Highlights of the collection are currently on display on the Library's first floor, and access to the collection is available through Special Collections.
- Play for a chance to win a $500 gift certificate from the University Bookstore
- You will need to present your Cal State LA I.D. (Golden Eagle One Card) when you sign-in on the day of the tournament. Online registration only -- no walkups.

Tournament Schedule
(Note: The schedule below was revised-on-the-fly due to the smaller number of players. Games were longer, and an extra game was played to account for the odd number of players.)
The tournament will be single-elimination, with the winner of draws being determined by the system described in the tournament rules.
Below is the anticipated schedule. As you can see, it is a tight schedule, with only a five-minute break between sessions. We have 10 boards and so we need players to proceed swiftly through their games (i.e., limit your post game analysis, please). Players are welcome to keep their own game records, but we are not requiring players write down their moves. Players are required to reset their boards after each game.
Registration - 11:00 - 11:30 am
Players who have registered will check-in. Players not checked in by 11:30 will be scratched.
Orientation - 11:30 - 12:00 pm
There will be a mandatory tournament orientation for all players. At this orientation we will present the guidelines under which the tournament will be conducted. We are trying to create a friendly and not too formal match, and ask players to review the rules of chess in advance of the tournament. It is the responsibility of the payers to know the rules of the game.
