Welcome to
eLearning Programs and Support
The eLPS Center at CSULA supports faculty in the application of appropriate pedagogical and computer-based educational technologies, including tools for both classroom and distance learning.
To accomplish this mission, eLPS:
- Provides a campus resource for instructional technology integration, instructional design for distance learning, and instruction for technologies that support these efforts,
- Offers workshops and one-on-one tutorials that address pedagogy and technology integration planning, course redesign and development, and technical skill-building,
- Provides support for the campus learning management system and other web-supplemented course offerings, and
- Researches and disseminates new instructional technologies and teaching strategies to enhance learning outcomes through the integration of technology in instruction.
We work closely with Dr. Maria Dolores Costa, the Director of Faculty Development and Pedagogical Support, in the CSULA Faculty Development Center.
What is eLearning?
eLearning is a broad term to describe the use of technologies in support of teaching. While many of these technologies are computer-based, some, such as clickers, may have an additional hardware component.
Like the Internet, eLearning is maturing rapidly. At one time, exotic approaches to teaching, such as sophisticated web pages and video productions, were beyond the reach of the average instructor but today's powerful and easy to use tools are quickly lowering the barrier to enhancing your courses.
There are many benefits to using technology in your teaching, among them:
- Appealing to students: In the tenth "State of Our Nation's Youth" report, students listed "more up-to-date technology" as the number one Most Important Potential School Improvement (Link to the report).
- Time-savings: Do the work once and reuse the materials in future academic terms.
- Easy updating: Using digital content enables you to easily modify course material to reflect current events.
- Managing courses: Distributing a syllabus and assignments online means students have around-the-clock access to your handouts and reduces excuses!
- Providing accessibility: Screen readers and other technologies assist in bringing your course material to students with disabilities
The eLPS staff are here to help you discover, learn, and use appropriate tools for your teaching. Please stop by our lab or attend one of our workshops to better see how new ideas in technology might be of use to you and your students.
