Assessment of student learning is crucial in every college and university. Although students come to us with a variety of skills and challenges, it is imperative that we monitor their progress and achievement. Our mission is to create a culture of evidence through meaningful, manageable and sustainable assessment of student learning outcomes that leads to programmatic and organizational effectiveness. The purpose of assessing student outcomes is to improve teaching and learning at the individual, course, program and institutional level. CSULA Assessment Policy appears here.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Objectives
Student learning outcomes are the stated
knowledge and skills that students are expected to acquire in a program
and be able to demonstrate upon completion of the program.
These SLOs focus on what the student will
take away from the learning experience and often involve skills directly
related to critical thinking, writing, technology, direct knowledge of
the field, or representative of the values of the discipline. What do
faculty want students to learn? How and when are these SLOs reflected in
the courses themselves? These statements provide the basis for
assessment of student learning. Consult the
Glossary of Assessment
Terms for the definitions of assessment terms used at CSULA.
Student Learning Outcomes by College and Program
These student learning outcomes are
stated by college and program.
How many departments have Student Learning Outcomes? Is their assessment leading to improvement in programs? See graph here.
Assessment Coordinators
The
Campus Assessment Coordinator is
Prof. Anne Hafner.
Other faculty and administrators are responsible for monitoring the
assessment efforts in their
colleges. Prof. Hafner's power point
presentation on assessment appears
