Assistant Professor of Special Education Mild Moderate Disabilities

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate in Special Education from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required. However, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/20/2020).
2) Documented experience in special education, with an emphasis in mild/moderate disabilities
3) Evidence of successful teaching experience with K-12 students

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Evidence of experience in educator preparation for culturally and linguistically responsive teaching in the K-12 settings
2) Evidence of a minimum of three years teaching experience
3) Documented experience or training in literacy and/or science education and/or math education
4) Evidence of contemporary research activity in special education, with an emphasis on disability studies
5) Evidence of successful university teaching experience at the undergraduate level
6) Documented experience developing partnerships with schools and communities in relation to fieldwork, research, and professional development opportunities for teachers
7) Demonstrated record of scholarly research, grant writing, and curriculum design
8) Documented experience using technology in educational settings, including online teaching
9) Evidence of experience in anti-bias, restorative practices, and social justice K-8 education


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The Assistant Professor in Special Education will teach courses in all special education credentialing pathways such as the residency, intern, and traditional programs. This faculty member will specifically support the undergraduate Bachelors of Arts in Urban Learning (ULRN) program which integrates the multiple subject and education specialist teaching credential courses in the program. In addition, the successful candidate will assist with the improvement of ULRN curriculum and fieldwork design, including building partnerships with local schools and communities, as well as engage with other faculty in the college and across the university on initiatives in support of undergraduate teacher education. 

Faculty teaching in credential programs are expected to maintain active participation in the public school system, at least once every three years, appropriate to their credential area and to regularly collaborate with colleagues in P12 settings and the broader educational community to continuously work toward credential program improvements.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department:

The Division of Special Education and Counseling in the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles, offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study leading to a variety of degrees, credentials, and certificates/added authorizations. Preparation is offered for teachers, counselors, school psychologists, and specialists in education, counseling, rehabilitation, and related services.

The B.A. in Urban Learning, a cross-divisional undergraduate program in the Charter College of Education, integrates the B.A. (a social science degree with a focus on urban education) and an option of the degree that incorporates the multiple subject and educational specialist teaching credentials. The program provides students with depth in teaching and learning in urban contexts and an approved elementary subject matter waiver (which satisfies the California state subject matter requirement (e.g., Praxis, CSET, etc.)
