Assistant Professor of Mathematics

An earned doctorate (Ph.D) in Mathematics or closely-related discipline (such as Mathematical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics) from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required with a specialization in Probability and/or Statistics, or extensive coursework in these fields at the graduate level. Applicants nearing completion (ABD) may be considered; however, for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by 8/16/2018.
1) Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate level;
2) Excellent communication skills, and;
3) Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.
1) Experience teaching courses in probability theory at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels;
2) Ability to support instruction in financial, actuarial, or applied mathematics;
3) Experience in course coordination;
4) Record of scholarly activity involving students, and;
5) Record of publications.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in his/her area of expertise at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will participate in the curriculum development process. In particular, the faculty member will actively participate in the creation of additional courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of actuarial and/or financial mathematics. In addition, scholarly activity and peer-reviewed publications and/or grant activity are required for tenure. The department has steadily increased the number of students involved in research at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the successful candidate will contribute to this effort.
The Department offers bachelors and masters degrees in Mathematics. Many of our undergraduate majors are prospective teachers, and a good proportion of our graduate students will become teachers at the community college level.
