Department of Communication Disorders

Assistant Professor of Speech-Language Pathology with an emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Adult Neurogenic Language Disorders; Motor Speech Disorders; Voice Disorders; Alternative/Augmentative Communication; or Fluency Disorders.

Starting Date:

Spring 2018 (January 18, 2018) or Fall 2018 (August 16, 2018)

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Speech-Language Pathology or other closely-related discipline from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. Possession of national certification in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) is required. For appointment, the doctorate and CCC-SLP must be completed by the date of appointment (8/16/18). 

Other minimum qualifications include:

1) Evidence of expertise in one or more of the following areas: Adult Neurogenic Language Disorders, Motor Speech Disorders, Voice Disorders, Alternative/Augmentative Communication, or Fluency Disorders;
2) Possession of or eligibility for California licensure in speech-language pathology, and;
3) Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and;
2) Evidence of scholarly achievement (for example, academic or professional presentations, publications in refereed journals) in speech-language pathology or closely related area.


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of expertise and other courses in the department in consultation with the Department Chair. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in clinical education in the on-campus Robert L. Douglass Speech-Language Clinic.

The Department of Communication Disorders is located in the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services and offers programs leading to the B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication Disorders. The M.A. degree program in Speech-Language Pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.  Admission to the M.A. program is highly competitive. The seven-year first-time pass rate for the PRAXIS exam in Speech-Language Pathology is 100%. On-site Language Labs are located in the department as well as a Speech-Language Clinic, and access to a large variety of off-campus training sites. In addition, the Department was recently approved to launch a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program with a Fall 2018 start date.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
