Assistant Professor of Microbiology

Starting Date:

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field from an accredited institution of higher education is required, with a minimum of one year of relevant post-doctoral experience. The applicant must possess scholarly and professional competence as demonstrated by a record of research publications. 

We seek an individual with a strong foundation in general microbiology and who performs cutting edge research in one of the following sub disciplines:  medical or applied microbiology including virology, hematology, bacterial physiology, microbial genetics, or microbial ecology.

The applicant must have demonstrated potential for effective teaching lower and/or upper division undergraduate core courses in microbiology such as general microbiology and microbial genetics, bacterial physiology, medical microbiology, virology, or hematology as well as graduate courses, with high academic standards using a variety of methodologies.  The applicant must be interested in mentoring and working closely with undergraduate and Master’s program graduate students both in the classroom and in research. The applicant must be willing to participate actively in course and curriculum development and to work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary department and college. The applicant must be supported by three strong, positive letters of recommendation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to individuals with college level teaching experience in microbiology. Applicants with research interests in medical microbiology or applied microbiology including those individuals working in virology, hematology, bacterial physiology, microbial genetics, or microbial ecology will be given preference. Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated potential for securing external grant support.


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The selected candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and Master’s program graduate courses that may include general microbiology, microbial genetics, bacterial physiology, medical microbiology, virology, or hematology, provide academic advisement to students, participate in curriculum development with the opportunity to create courses in his/her area of expertise, and develop a productive, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and Master’s students, and strengthen partnerships with the bioscience industry. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in academic governance and committee service for the Department, College of Natural and Social Sciences, and the University.


Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
