Teaching Associate, English Department
Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English. Teaching Associates must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period. Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.
Candidates must meet the following specific requirements:
- Must possess a bachelor’s degree in any field
- Must be admitted to the MA program in English
- Must apply to the TA program and be approved by the English Department Graduate Studies Committee, the TA Coordinator, and the Composition Coordinator
- Must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA on their program
- Must complete an orientation program in the week prior to the first teaching assignment
- Must participate in the training workshops conducted by the TA Coordinator
- Must be able to work effectively and collegially with other TAs, the TA Coordinator and Composition Coordinator
- Must have completed or be enrolled in ENGL 504 (or ENGL 5040)
- Must enroll in ENGL 5055 during first semester of teaching and ENGL 5050 during second semester of teaching
- Must enroll in ENGL 3980 (1 unit) and 4990 (2 units) during each semester of employment
The ability to instruct and evaluate students in first-year writing classes (ENGL 1005A, ENGL 1005B, and ENGL 1010).
Students will be selected as Teaching Associates based on the quality of their past academic performance, their potential for teaching, and their demonstrated ability or potential to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty. All applications will be reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee, the TA Coordinator, and the Composition Coordinator. All qualified applications will be ranked. Numerical rankings and openings available will determine entry into the TA Program.
Successful candidates will be assigned one class per semester and may receive course assignments for no more than four semesters. Teaching Associates are expected to instruct and evaluate student work in their assigned classes and fulfill the stated goals and requirements of the courses to which they are assigned, to hold office hours, and to participate in mid-term and end-of-term course and program assessment activities. In addition, Teaching Associates are expected to collaborate in a workshop environment to create common course syllabi and instructional materials.

Standard documentation includes: cover letter of application, TA application form, curriculum vitae, writing sample (approximately 10 pages), transcripts of post-secondary work (unless degree is from CSULA), GET print-out verifying enrollment in a program of graduate study in the English Department, three letters of recommendation (dated within the last two years), and the University’s Application for Academic Employment form. Employment contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
