Krishna Foster (Chemistry and Biochemistry) has been selected as a recipient of a “100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award” by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for encouraging and inspiring young women to pursue careers in science, September, 2015.
Jane Gauthier (Criminal Justice and Criminalistics) received the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission Volunteer of the Year Award during a luncheon at the Los Angeles Music Center on April 13, 2015. The Los Angeles County’s Human Relations Commission nominated Gauthier in recognition of her work on the panel’s annual hate crime report, as well as for planning and designing a research project on the impact of hate crime on the transgender community.
Jane Dong (Electrical Engineering) and Nancy McQueen (Biological Sciences) will collaborate with San Jose State University and Cal Poly Pomona as part of a $3 million four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of degrees earned by underrepresented minority students in STEM fields, October, 2015.
Mark Tufenkjian (Civil Engineering) was awarded a $580,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research and a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, August, 2015. The goal of the program is to provide a pipeline of high quality graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields who will be prepared for civilian jobs in the Navy. The grant will be funded over a three-year period.
Veena P. Prabhu, Stephen J.J. McGuire and Kern K. Kwong (Management) were awarded the Best Paper in the International Management Track at the Academy of International Business, Southwest Chapter at Dallas in March, 2014. Jane McKeever (TV, Film and Media Studies), co-owner of HF2 Productions: Happy Feet Foley, won an Emmy in the category of "Outstanding Sound Editing" for the HBO series, Game of Thrones, September 20, 2015.
Bridget Murnane (TV, Film and Media Studies) won a Los Angeles area Emmy in the “Arts and Culture/History” category for the film, “Mia, A Dancer’s Journey,” July 25, 2015. Murnane is the associate producer of the film.
James Rudd (Chemistry and Biochemistry) was awarded a $2.8 million grant, for a period of four years, from the U.S. Department of Education to establish a multi-institutional, regional STEM Education Consortium, October, 2015.
Romelia Salinas (Library) was awarded two Program for Affordable Learning Materials (PALM) grants by the Chancellor’s Office in support of work addressing the escalating cost of textbooks for students, April, 2015.
Tonatiuh Rodriguez-Nikl (Civil Engineering) received a $279,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to acquire a shake table for simulated earthquake testing, October, 2015.
Linda Tiller (Intercollegiate Athletics), administrative support coordinator, was presented the 2015 Outstanding Staff Award during the 41st annual Cal State LA Staff Appreciation Day on September 10, 2015.
Nat Trives (Emeritus, Criminal Justice and Criminalistics) was presented the Mark J. Benjamin Community Impact Award from the Human Relations Council of Santa Monica Bay Area, April 23, 2015. He also was a recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award during the Alumni Awards Gala at Cal State LA on May 15, 2015.
Valentine Villa (Social Work/Applied Gerontology Institute) was awarded a $55,000 grant from the California Community Foundation to launch a training program for adults caring for family members with Parkinson’s disease and related brain disorders, April, 2015.
Deborah Won (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received a $249,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to help launch a bridge program focused on service learning called the “BOOST: Bridge Opportunities Offered for the Sophomore Transition,” August, 2015.
